Quality Assurance
For any product to be commercially successful it needs to be built to a good standard,
otherwise customers will not trust the brand and not buy it or recommend it to other
people. Whether you are a mobile phone manufacturer or a house builder you need to have
methods of checking your work is up to standard.
Large companies make use of x-ray machines to check for defects in products such as soft
drinks can or plastic mobile phone casings. This is expensive but is cost effective when used
on a product that is being mass produced.
Builders will check that things are square (have right angles) on a large and small scale, for
small items they can use a try square. On larger items they can use a 3 – 4 - 5 triangle, this
is also known as Pythagoras theory and can be used over large spaces, football pitches are
set out this way.
1. Why do companies use quality assurance checks?
2. Explain two methods of checking quality?
3. If a triangle has sides measuring 3, 4 and 5, it must have a right angle in one corner,
builders use this method to get a right angle. As the triangle gets bigger the angles stay the
same, so multiplying all the sides by 3 would give you a 9, 12 and 15 triangle. Work out the
length of the missing sides in the right angled triangles below.
