Changing a Mixed Number
into an Improper Fraction
• Sometimes, you will be
asked to or be forced
to make a mixed number
an improper fraction.
• Here’s how you do it:
• First, breathe!!
• Second, you will multiply
the whole number by the
denominator.
• 2 3
4
2*4=8
Next, you add the
numerator to what you
just multiplied.
8 + 3 = 11
Last, you put that new
number over the same
denominator from the mixed
number

Improper Fraction to a Mixed
Number
• An improper fraction is
a fraction where the
numerator is larger than
the denominator.
• Example:
• 14
3
• To turn an improper
fraction to a mixed
number, you:
• Simply divide the
denominator by the
numerator. This will
give you a whole
number.
• Then, you subtract the
numerator by having
you have left over from
the division.
• Last, put this fraction
over the same
denominator in the
improper fraction.
