HQ02 TEST SUMMARY
(PRELIMINARY)
June 28, 2013
FERMILAB

HQ02 Test at Fermilab
 First HQ02 magnet test at Fermilab
 HQ coils #12, #13 and #15 tested previously in a “mirror” structure
 HQ02 arrived fully assembled and instrumented
 Modifications required to the suspension system used at VMTF
 Minor modifications required for the cable pigtails

HQ02 Test at Fermilab
 15 kA Header assembly was used in this test with
lambda plate for 1.9 K test
o 82% of SSL at 1.9 K and 92% of SSL at 4.5 K
o Field quality measurements at 1.9 K
 Main test goals:
o Quench performance study within the power supply limits
o Ramp rate dependence study
o Temperature dependence study
o Field quality measurements
o Quench protection study
 Test plan, developed together by members of the
participant laboratories, may serve as a first step
toward the future test protocol
o Preliminary test results or any change in the test plan
were discussed at the video or phone meetings

HQ02 Test at Fermilab
 Coils #15, #16, #17 and #20 with improved design
0.778-mm diameter Nb3Sn RRP strand of 108/127 sub-element design
o Additional space was provided in the tooling cavity
o Improved coil and heater insulation
o 25-µm thick, 8-mm wide Stainless Steel (SS) core
o
 Coil #15 previously tested in a mirror structure at Fermilab: 97% of
SSL was reached at 4.5 K and 94% of SSL - at ~2.2 K
 Coils #16, #17 and #20 never tested or loaded previously
 60 mΩ dump resistor used for the stored energy extraction
 16 protection heaters were combined in 4 individual groups
connected to a separate power unit

HQ02 Test Summary
 HQ02 magnet with the new generation coils successfully was tested at
Fermilab
 The magnet reached 15 kA power supply limit at all temperatures from 1.9 K
(82% of SSL) to 4.5 K (92% of SSL)
 All training quenches initiated in the high field area (pole turn segments)
 At both 4.5 K and 1.9 K no quenches were observed up to the 15 kA power
supply limit for ramp rates below 200 A/s (1.9 K) and 150 A/s (4.5 K)
 No quenches were observed during down ramps from 14.6 kA for ramp rates
20-300 A/s
 Holding current tests performed both at 4.5 K and 1.9 K. 14.6 kA current was
held for 30 min. Later on magnetic measurements were performed at this
current for several hours
 Field quality measurements were performed at 1.9 K and 4.6 K (J. DiMarco
and X. Wang)
 Quench protection study performed at 1.9 K and 4.5 K (T. Salmi)
