JOURNALS
JOURNALS
• EACH DAY, UNLESS THERE IS A TEST OR A SPECIFIC EVENT IN CLASS THAT
PREVENTS US FROM DOING SO (LIKE MRS. TUCKER FORGETTING), THERE
WILL BE A JOURNAL PROMPT OF SOME SORT ON THE BOARD. YOU NEED
TO KEEP UP WITH EACH ENTRY (EITHER IN A SPIRAL NOTEBOOK, A WRITERS
NOTEBOOK, OR ON LOOSE LEAF PAPER IN YOUR NOTEBOOK). YOU WILL
NEED TO LABEL THEM ACCORDINGLY (I SHOULD HAVE THEM LABELED FOR
YOU). EVERY 10 JOURNALS, I WILL DO A JOURNAL CHECK FOR A
FORMATIVE GRADE. THERE WILL ALSO BE TIMES WHERE YOU WILL BE
ASKED TO GO BACK AND LOOK AT A SPECIFIC JOURNAL AND EDIT/REVISE
IT FOR A SUMMATIVE WRITING GRADE.
ENTRY #1: THE CHILDREN AND THE MOUNTAIN:
LOOK AT THE IMAGE AND WRITE A CREATIVE STORY
ABOUT ONE OF THE INDIVIDUALS THAT YOU SEE.
FORMAT DOES NOT MATTER. IT CAN BE IN THE FORM
OF A LETTER, A SHORT STORY, A JOURNAL/DIARY
ENTRY, ETC. JUST BECOME ONE OF THE INDIVIDUALS
YOU SEE IN THE PHOTO AND TELL ME ABOUT THIS
MOMENT. BE CREATIVE.
JOURNAL #2: THE ALCHEMIST PROLOGUE
• I AM GOING TO RE-READ THE PROLOGUE OF THE
ALCHEMIST TO YOU. AFTER WARDS, I WANT YOU TO
WRITE A RESPONSE TO THE PROLOGUE. WHAT DO YOU
THINK THE STORY MEANS, HOW DOES IT CONNECT TO
SANTIAGO AND OR THE NOVEL, WHAT DO YOU GET OUT
OF IT?
JOURNAL #3: VOICE LESSON
• COPY THE QUOTE FIRST: “ART IS THE ANTIDOTE THAT CAN CALL US BACK FROM THE EDGE OF
NUMBNESS, RESTORING THE ABILITY TO FEEL FOR ANOTHER.” –BARBARA KINGSOLVER
• ANSWER: BY USING THE WORD ANTIDOTE, WHAT DOES THE AUTHOR IMPLY ABOUT THE
INABILITY TO FEEL FOR ANOTHER?
• IF WE CHANGED THE WORD ANTIDOTE TO GIFT, WHAT EFFECT WOULD IT HAVE ON THE
MEANING OF THE SENTENCE?
• APPLY: BRAINSTORM WITH A PARTNER AND DEVELOP A LIST OF MEDICAL TERMS; THEN WRITE
A SENTENCE USING A MEDICAL TERM TO CHARACTERIZE ART. EXPLAIN TO THE CLASS THE
EFFECT THIS TERM HAS ON THE MEANING OF THE SENTENCE.
JOURNAL #4: VOICE LESSON
• WRITE THE QUOTE FIRST: “ONCE I AM SURE THERE’S NOTHING GOING ON/ I STEP INSIDE, LETTING
THE DOOR THUD SHUT.” –PHILIP LARKIN, “CHURCH GOING”
• ANSWER: WHAT FEELINGS ARE EVOKED BY THE WORD THUD?
• HOW WOULD THE MEANING CHANGE IF THE SPEAKER LET THE DOOR SLAM SHUT?
• APPLY: FILL IN THE FOLLOWING CHART. IN THE FIRST COLUMN, RECORD FIVE DIFFERENT VERBS
WHICH EXPRESS THE CLOSING OF A DOOR; IN THE SECOND COLUMN, RECORD THE FEELING THESE
VERBS EVOKE.
Verbs for closing the Door
Feelings evoked by the Verb
JOURNAL #5: STAGES OF THE HERO’S QUEST
• TAKE OUT YOUR CONNECTIONS TO THE 5 REQUIREMENTS OF A QUEST AND
HOW YOU CONNECTED CHAPTER 1 OF HRLLP TO THE ALCHEMIST. NEXT, READ THE
FOLLOWING DEFINITION:
ALCHEMY: THE MEDIEVAL FORERUNNER OF CHEMISTRY, BASED ON THE SUPPOSED
TRANSFORMATION OF MATTER. IT WAS CONCERNED PARTICULARLY WITH
ATTEMPTS TO CONVERT BASE METALS INTO GOLD OR TO FIND A UNIVERSAL ELIXIR;
A SEEMINGLY MAGICAL PROCESS OF TRANSFORMATION, CREATION, OR
COMBINATION
• ANSWER: WHY IS THE TITLE OF THE NOVEL AN APPROPRIATE TITLE? EXPLAIN
USING DETAILS/EXAMPLES FROM THE BOOK.
• CREATIVE RESPONSE: IF YOU HAD TO GIVE THE NOVEL A DIFFERENT TITLE, OR A
SUBTITLE, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
PEER EDIT
• AS A PAIR, YOU DECIDE WHO IS IN CHARGE OF WHAT (SEE LIST BELOW). ALSO, EACH PERSON WILL BE
MARKING ON YOUR PAPER IN A DIFFERENT COLOR PEN TO INDICATE WHAT THEY WERE LOOKING FOR.

VOCABULARY, ARE WORDS USED CORRECTLY, ETC.)
3.
SYNTAX AND GRAMMAR (ARE THERE TOO MANY SIMPLE SENTENCES, ARE THERE TOO MANY COMMA
SPLICES, IS THERE ONLY ONE PERIOD USED IN THE ENTIRE PARAGRAPH…DON’T LAUGH, IT HAPPENS)
4.
CONTENT (DO THEY PROPERLY ADDRESS THEIR CLAIM THROUGHOUT, DO YOU HAVE QUESTIONS
ABOUT SOME OF THEIR ARGUMENTS, DO THEY MAKE MIND-BLOWING POINTS YOU WISH YOU
THOUGHT OF, CAN YOU ADD SOMETHING TO WHAT THEY HAVE SAID THAT THEY COULD USE TO MAKE
IT BETTER)
