COMPOUND VERBS
(a verb that is made up of 2 parts eg. passé composé or
futur proche)
When the verb is made up of 2 parts, the
second part of the negative is placed after the first part
OR the second part of the verb. It depends which group
the negative belongs to. Group A or Group B.
Negatives with compound verbs
Group A negatives : ne…pas, ne…plus, ne…jamais,
ne…rien
These negatives go around the first part of the verb.
Ex:

COMPOUND VERBS 2
Group B negatives
ne…personne, ne…que, ne…ni…ni, ne…aucun(e),
ne…nulle part.
In this case personne/que/ni/aucun(e)/nulle part go
after the second part of the verb.

Compound verbs with group B negatives
Copy and translate the following sentences:
Ils ont vu mon frère. > (They only saw my brother)
Ils n’ont vu que mon frère.
Ils sont allés quelque part. > (They went nowhere)
Ils ne sont allés nulle part.
Ils vont manger du poulet et des frites. > (They are going to eat
neither chicken nor chips)
Ils ne vont manger ni du poulet ni des frites.
Compound verbs with group B negatives
1. Je vais voir un bateau. > (I am not going to see any boat)
Je ne vais voir aucun bateau.

REFLEXIVE VERBS
With reflexive verbs the first part of the negative is
placed before the reflexive pronoun

used on their own

Personne and rien may also be
subjects and will need to be placed at the
beginning of the sentence.
