How are they written ?
As we know, negatives in French are
made up of two words, ‘ne’ and something
else (e.g. ‘pas’)
These words are usually written around
the verb.
Je ne pense pas.
Nous n’ avons pas.
Types of negatives
In year 10, there are three negative
phrases we need to know.
Ne … pas
Ne … jamais
Ne … rien
Not
=
Never
Nothing

Special rules for negatives:
Be aware that in French, when using
negatives relating to PLURAL things, we use
‘de’ after the negative (not ‘des’), and we drop
the reference to the number.
J’ ai deux freres.
Je n’ ai pas de freres.

In a phrase using du / de la / des, the negative
version of the same phrase ALWAYS uses ‘de’
too.
Il y a du soleil
Il n’ y a pas de soleil.
Il y a des nuages
Il n’ y a pas de nuages.

In French when we have two verbs
together, the negative phrase goes
around the first verb.
