Dictionary use
• Remind me of the letters English does not
have or use.
• Parts of Speech - adj for adjectives, adv for
adverbs, conj for conjunctions, interj for
interjections, n for nouns, prep for
prepositions, pron for pronouns, v for verbs
• Variant meanings of words – consider the
word ‘spring’.
• Idiom = a group of words that do not translate
as their meaning suggests (e.g an arm and a
leg, at the drop of a hat, a piece of cake, two
peas in a pod).
Now let’s practice what we learned.
• Look up the words for this task using the following
website, WordReference.com.
• In the upper left corner choose the English-Spanish
search option.
• Consider the following parts of speech as you
search:
– Noun (n) = person, place, thing, or idea (E.g. car, Cedartown, life)
– Verb (v) = the action, or what is being done (E.g. run, skate)
– Adjective (adj) = describes nouns and pronouns. (Answers
the following questions: Which one?, What kind?, and How many?) (E.g. red car, long
life)
What is a cognate?
Cognate = words in 2 languages that share
a similar meaning, spelling, and
pronunciation.
For example, e.g.:
Alfabeto = alphabet
Similar = similar
Doctor = doctor
Now let’s learn about the different types of
cognates.
Apply what you have learned about
cognates.
• Let’s see how many of these 20 cognates you
can translate without using a dictionary.
KWL
Make a 3 column chart and label it KWL.
1. In the K column, write 1 thing that you know
about using a Spanish-English dictionary.
2. In the W column, write 2 things that you
want to know about using a Spanish-English
dictionary.
3. In the L column, write 3 things that you
learned about cognates.
