Indirect Speech- Page 1
Indirect Speech / Indirect Statements / Indirect Discourse
-Used when an action (spoken words, thoughts,
feelings) is reported instead of being directly quoted.
-The subject of the report falls into the Accusative
-The verb of the ID Speech clause stays in the Infinitive
form.
-Translate/add « that » at the start of the indirect
statement
-Although… “that” is often optional in conversational English.
- “that [Acc subject] is/are verb-ing” is a preferred
translation but a simple verb (he walks, I run, you jump,
etc) is sometimes a better choice.
