Objects
Objects of Verbs- Basic Definition
Only ACTION VERBS have direct or
indirect objects – PA’s and PN’s go with
Linking Verbs
Direct object: receives the action of the
verb.
– Answers question what or whom?
Indirect object: tells to what, to whom, for
what or for whom an action is done.
– Is placed before the direct object.
How do I find an object?
Direct
object:
Find the subject and the verb and
ask…who/what?
Ex: John wrote a compelling novel about
ants.
Indirect
object:
Find the subject, verb, and DO and
ask…To whom or for whom?
Ex: The rescue team gives the survivors
hot food.
Steps to Finding an Object
1.
Cross off prepositional phrases
2. Identify the verb
3. Decide whether the verb is
ACTION or LINKING (linking verbs
can only have PA’s and PN’s)
If it’s action- ask _(verb)__ who or
what? This is your direct object
If it’s action- ask __(verb)__ to or
for whom? This is your indirect
object.
Remember…
1.
The sentence can only have an
indirect object if it also has a direct
object. So…no DO = no IO either
2. The INDIRECT OBJECT will always
PRECEDE (come before) the DIRECT
OBJECT in a sentence – otherwise it’s
a prep phrase. Ex: Mom gave the
dog to me. (“ME” is not an IO since it
follows a preposition)
