RECOGNIZING DIRECT OBJECTS
• A direct object is a noun or pronoun that
receives the action of a verb.
• Direct objects come AFTER action verbs.
• Ask what? or whom? after an action verb.
• Examples:
– My younger sister found the hidden presents.
• (found WHAT?)
– I called Christina later that day.
• (called WHOM?)
– My dog Tinker likes a long run.
• (likes WHAT?)

DON’T BE TRICKED!
• A direct object is never:
– an adverb
– The noun/pronoun at the end of a prepositional
phrase
• Examples:
– Dan rode his bike.
– Dan rode quickly.
– Dan rode through town.

• An indirect object is a noun or pronoun that comes
after an action verb and before a direct object.
• It names the person or thing to which something is
given or for which something is done.
• A sentence cannot have an indirect object unless it
has a direct object.

• TIP: Find the direct object first, then ask the
appropriate question.
• TIP: Keep in mind the following order:
– Subject + Verb + Indirect Object + Direct Object
