Present Progressive
When do we use Present
Progressive?
We use the present progressive to talk
about actions that we:
are doing now.
are planning on doing soon.
For example:
The pirates are cleaning the ship now.
The pirates are looking for treasure today.
The pirates are sailing to the island tonight.
Time expressions
Time expressions for present progressive:
*Now
*Right now
*At the moment
*Soon
*Today
*Tonight
How do we form
the present progressive?
Look at the examples:
Henry is reading a book now.
Lucy is pointing at the bird.
To form the present progressive we need to have the following:
Subject + am/is/are + VERB + ing + ~~~~~ + Time Expression
Henry
is
READing
a book now
am/is/are
The verb ‘be’ is a helping verb
in the present progressive.
Just a reminder:
I am
You are
We are
They are
He is
She is
It is
How do we add ‘ing’ to the
verb.
O Regular verbs just add‘ing’
play – playing
sing – singing
O Verb ending in ‘e’, we drop the ‘e’ and add ‘ing’
dance – dancing
write – writing
O Verbs ending in ‘ie’, we drop the ‘ie’ and put ‘y’
tie – tying
lie – lying
O Verbs that end with a combination of consonant – vowel –
consonant, CVC, we have to double the last letter and add
‘ing’.
sit – sitting
dig – digging
There are 5 letters that we cannot double: h, w, v, x and y.
O But if the word ends with a CVC combination and it has
more than one syllable, then we have to find out if the stress
is on the last syllable.
open – O/pen – The stress is on the first syllable, so we
don’t double the ‘n’ and we get –
opening.
begin – be/GIN – the stress is on the last syllable, so
we double the ‘n’ and get –
beginning.
Let’s try together!
O Henry and Lucy _____________ (talk) to the pirates.
O Henry and Lucy are talking to the pirates.
O Lucy _____________ (make) a pirate map.
O Lucy is making a pirate map.
Forming questions
O To ask a question in the present progressive,
you move the ‘am’ ‘is’ ‘are’ to the beginning of
the sentence:
O Is Henry talking to the pirates?
O Henry is talking to the pirates.
O Are Lucy and the pirates dancing?
O Lucy and the pirates are dancing.
Forming a negative sentence
O To form a negative sentence you have to add the
word ‘not’. It comes after the helping verb ‘be’.
O For example:
O I am not sailing a ship now.
O Henry is not eating fish and chips right now.
O The pirates are not digging for treasure right now.
