HOW TO CONJUGATE REGULAR VERBS IN THE PRESENT TENSE !!!
A regular verb is one which follows a regular pattern.
There are three types of regular verb in French……..
Verbs ending in ER (these are the most common)
Eg regarder, écouter, chanter, manger, danser, parler, jouer
Verbs ending in IR
Eg finir,choisir
Verbs ending in RE
Eg attendre
How do you conjugate a regular verb ending in ER ??!!
First of all take off the ER
Then add the correct ending for the subject pronoun(I,you
,he,she ..etc.. but in French!!) which you are using.
For regular ER verbs the endings are as follows…
Je
………….e
Tu
………….es
Il/elle/on …… e
Nous ……… ons
Vous ……… ez
Ils/elles ………ent
Now let’s try it with REGARDER = to watch (infinitive)
3 STEPS
1. First choose your personal
pronoun………je/tu/il/elle/on/nous/vous/ils/elles
2. Then take the ER off regarder and put it after your pronoun
3. Now add the correct ending for your pronoun
Je
regarde
Tu
regardes
Il
regarde
Elle
regarde
On
regarde
Nous
regardons
Vous

Ils
regardent
Elles

How do you conjugate a regular verb ending in IR??!!
First of all take off the IR
Then add the correct ending for the subject pronoun(I,you
,he,she ..etc.. but in French!!) which you are using.
For regular IR verbs the endings are as follows…
Je
Tu
………….is
…………is
Il/elle/on …… it
Nous ……… issons

• The verbs finir =to finish and choisir=
to choose work like this but some other
common verbs you know and need
DON’T! (oh la la!!!)
• Dormir(to sleep), partir (to leave) and
sortir(to go out) are the important ones
to learn!
• SEE NEXT SLIDE

Although they don’t follow the same regular pattern as the
other ir verbs, can you see a pattern that they do follow???
How do you conjugate a regular verb ending in RE (or OIR??!!
First of all take off the RE
Then add the correct ending for the subject pronoun(I,you
,he,she ..etc.. but in French!!) which you are using.
For regular ER verbs the endings are as follows…
Je
Tu
………….s
………….s
Il/elle/on …… Nous ……… ons
Vous ……… ez
Ils/elles ………ent
Sadly ……not many RE verbs do
follow this pattern so you have to
learn the important ones by
heart!
(Etre,avoir,pouvoir,faire,prendre,
voire,vouloir,devoir,mettre,boire,
recevoir, lire)
MANY HAPPY VERB ENDINGS !
Hope this helps..
