The Conditional Tense
-saying what someone would do
Use:
• to say would do
You need 3 things:
1. a subject
2. the stem
3. the correct ending
To form the stem:
•
use the infinitive
(the whole verb –er, -ir, -re ending)
Now add the correct endings:
je
• ais
nous
• ions
tu
• ais
vous
• iez
il / elle/ • ait
ils/
• aient
on
elles
Do these endings look familiar?
Some examples
• he would dance – il danserait
• they would eat – ils mangeraient
• we would finish – nous finirions
• you would sell – vous vendriez
NB – chop off the final –e for –re verbs
Irregular Verbs
• faire – je ferais
• être – je serais
• aller – j’irais
• venir – je viendrais
• avoir – j’aurais
• vouloir – je voudrais
• pouvoir – je pourrais
