French Grammar Basics

Verbs
 A verb is the action word in a sentence.
 It is the word that says what happens,
discusses an action, or describes a state of
being.
 French verbs must be conjugated.
danser (to dance), penser (to think), avoir
(to have), être (to be), finir (to finish),
prendre (to take)
Subject
 A subject is the person or thing that is doing
the action or is being described in a sentence.
A subject is a noun or a pronoun.
Nouns
 A noun is a word that represents a person,
place, or thing, whether concrete (e.g., chair,
dog) or abstract (idea, happiness).

In French, all nouns have a gender - they are
either masculine or feminine.

The gender of some nouns makes sense:
◦ homme (man) is masculine
◦ femme (woman) is feminine

The gender of other nouns don't make sense:
◦ personne (person) and victime (victim) are always
feminine, even when the person or victim is a man!
Subject pronouns



Pronouns are words that substitute for nouns.
The subject of a verb is the person or thing
which performs the action of that verb.
Subject pronouns replace this person or
thing.
In French the forms of verbs change for each
subject pronoun (conjugation).

The main subject pronouns are je, tu, il, elle,
on, qui, nous, vous, ils, and elles.
Mlle Bowker aime le français.
Elle aime le français.
A basic sentence in French consists of a subject
(pronoun or noun) and a conjugated verb.
