Adverbs
Adverbs indicate the manner of the
verbs of the sentences.
She is speaking fast.
(how is she speaking ? Fast.)
• We form adverbs by adding ly to
adjectives:
slow
slowly
careful
carefully
careless
carelessly
dangerous
dangerously
sad
sadly
• We omit e and add y to the adjectives
which end in le:
gentle
gently
subtle
subtly
• We omit y and add ily to the
adjectives which end in consonant + y:
happy
happily
easy
easily
• We add ally to the most of the
adjectives which end in ic:
tragic
tragically
drastic
drastically
• There are some irregular adverbs:
good
fast
hard
early
late
well
fast

• Some adjectives end in ly.

• We use an adverb to describe a verb
but an adjective to describe a noun:
He is a careful driver.
( driver is a noun so we use careful )
