5.2 Grammar:
Negation with
Nunca, Nadie,
Nada and Tampoco
Negation with the word “NO”
REPASO: To make a statement
negative, put a NO before the
verb.
Ex. Ella es alta.
She is tall.
Ella no es alta.
She is not tall.
NUNCA (never) & TAMPOCO (neither,
not either)
Nunca and Tampoco can be used in the
place of the word “NO” or they can be
added near the end of the sentence if the
sentence already contains the word “NO”.
Ex:
Tú nunca cantas.
Tú no cantas nunca.
You never sing.
Ex: Tú tampoco bailas.
Tú no bailas tampoco.
You don’t dance either.
NADA (nothing, not anything)
Use “Nada” to mean nothing as the subject of
a sentence.
Ex: Nada es fácil.
Nothing is easy.
Use “no” before the verb and “nada” after the
verb to mean “nothing” or “not anything”.
Ex: No necesito nada.
I don’t need anything.
NADIE (nobody, not anybody)
Nadie means “nobody”. To say “not anybody”
use no before the verb and nadie after the
verb.
Ex. Nadie va a la playa.
Nobody goes to the beach.
Ex. ¿Por qué no va a nadie a la playa?
Why doesn’t anybody go to the beach?
