Introducing
Linking Verbs
LINKING VERBS
linking verb – links the subject of a sentence with
an adjective or a noun.
Ex. The girls are athletes.
Forms of be, when they stand alone, are always
linking verbs.
DAY 1
Ex. She is a gymnast. I am a swimmer. They will be
runners.
The verbs seem, appear, look, taste, and feel can
also be linking verbs.
Ex. The swimmers look ready. The crowd appears
excited. The water feels warm.

PREDICATE NOUNS AND
ADJECTIVES
A sentence is made up of a subject and predicate.
Ex. Harry’s new hat is bright red.
predicate noun – a noun that follows a linking verb
and tells what the subject is.
DAY 2
Ex. Harry’s hat was a gift.
predicate adjective – an adjective that follows a
linking verb and tells what the subject is like.
Ex. The hat looks warm.
Mechanics and Usage:
Titles
Italicize or underline titles of long works, such
as novels, plays, films, newspapers,
magazines, artworks, and albums.
Use quotation marks around titles of short
works, such as short stories, essays, magazine
articles, songs, and poems.
DAY 3
Capitalize all the important words in titles,
along with the first and last words of the title.
Capitalize linking verbs in titles.

Garden.”
DAY 4
1. Tomas titled his essay “Sea Turtles are
worth Our Concern.”
2. Ellie got the lead role in the play “Our
Town.”
