Underline the participial phrase. Then, circle the
vocabulary word.
• 1. Wearing a dark line of stubble on his jaw, you could tell

• 3. Trapped in a terrible situation, Ponyboy implored

• Make two columns on your bellwork paper, then label them
GREASERS and SOCS. What vocabulary words do you associate
with each group? Write at least three words in each column.

Exercise #6
Directions: Rewrite the sentence with a participial phrase at the
beginning. To do so, search for verbs (action words!) and change
them into adjectives (descriptions!).
• 1. I felt my muscles contract as a strained to lift the heavy
weight.
• 2. The swimmers waited until the wave subsided before they
ran out into the surf.
