Defeatism? • “Top-tier” places are too hard to get into − I’ll never make it, so why bother? • “It’s not expected of us” − only the US actually wants so many publications • “If I understand it, it can’t be any good” • They might not like me − rejections always hurt; they’re personal; why get grief? • “Only US researchers have enough resources” − no amount of thinking can compensate for having rafts of machines What to do? Why not? • Life is too short to do anything other than worldclass research • How else will you know whether what you are doing is good? • Publications aren’t the end goal: − sharing knowledge − testing understanding − the fame, the fortune, the name in lights, … • Writing good papers is all about reading − for yourself − for the recipient Questions?
