Get a fresh perspective.
Slow down.
Personalize the process.
Use a computer.
1. Fresh Perspective
• Take a break between
writing and proofreading.
• Ask s/o to read your essay,
or read it to s/o.
• Record yourself reading
the essay; play back and
follow along.
1. Fresh Perspective
• Listen for:
Places where what is read differs from what is
written.
Places where the reader stumbles for any
reason.
Places where the listener gets distracted,
confused or bored.
2. Slow Down
• Cover your paper with a
ruler or scratch paper so
you can only see one line of
text.
• Read backward, sentence by
sentence (for unclear
sentence structure).
2. Slow Down
• Read backward, word
for word (for typos
and spelling mistakes).
• Circle verbs or
prepositions - focusing
on specific grammar
problems you have.
3. Personalize the Process
• Use the editing log I gave you.
• Read through the essay several times,
looking for a different problem each time
(verb tense, articles, etc.).
4. Use a Computer
• Print a draft designed for proofreading, e.g., put in
extra “hard returns”, so that each sentence starts
on a new line.
4. Use a Computer
• Use 14 point font or larger.
• Double or triple space the lines.
• Use spell check/grammar check.
