Verbs
What is a Verb?
a word that names an action or a
state of being.
Example:
She danced all night.
That was fun!
She had high hopes.
He ran home.
Types of Verbs…
Action Verb- tells what someone is
doing. The action can be either
physical or mental.
Examples:
He climbed the ladder.
She loves her puppy.
Open the blue textbook to
page 210.
Linking Verb- connects a noun or
pronoun with a word that identifies
or describes it.
Examples:
Tom is a good student.
The best movies are at the theatre.
Linking verbs act almost as equal
signs.
Tom is a good student.
Tom = a good student
In the English language, the most
common linking verb is the word be.
There are many different forms of
the word be.
Open the blue textbook to page 212.
Identify the Verbs…
He feels sad.
Feels is the verb. It is a linking
verb. He = sad.
Betty looked at Rita.
Looked is the verb. It is an action
verb.
Words that are related to the five
senses are also linking verbs.
Example:
That blanket feels soft.
That sounds beautiful.
She looks lovely.
Other linking verbs include: appears,
seems
To really figure out whether a verb is
linking, try replacing it with the word is or
are. If it still makes sense, it is a linking
verb.
Examples:
That blanket feels soft
That blanket is soft.
That sounds beautiful.
That is beautiful.
They look lovely.
They are lovely.

King Kong is a movie about a gorilla.
Is – linking
King Kong climbed to the top of the Empire State Building.
Climbed- action
King Kong escaped from the chains.
Escaped- action
He would be captured later in the day.
Would be- linking verbs captured- action verb
The movie goers were happy.
Were- linking verb
King Kong smelled stinky.
Smelled- helping verb.
Take out a sheet of
paper and open the blue
textbook to page 207.
