PN and PA Review
What are the first three steps you
must follow to find a complement?
• Remove prepositional phrases
• Find the verb
• Decide whether the verb is ACTION or LINKING
• If it’s action ask what or whom to find DO
• Then ask for what or for whom to find IO
• If it’s linking ask what or whom and decide if the word is
a noun/pronoun or an adjective
The LINKING VERBS
• COMMON LINKING VERBS
• Am, is, are, was, were
• Be, being, been
• SENSORY LINKING VERBS
• Looks, tastes, feels, sounds, smells
• OTHER LINKING VERBS
• Seems, appears, remains, becomes, stays,
grows
The two differences between a
DO and a PN
•
•

PN follows linking verb
