Variant Spellings

are called variant spellings or variants.
• For example, the word ax can also be
spelled axe.
• Both are correct and both are included in
your dictionary.

Parts of Speech
• Words are used in different ways in a
sentence. The way a word is used
determines its part of speech. Some
words can be used as more than one part
of speech.
• For example play can be used as a verb or
a noun.
