Parts of Speech Introduction
How Many Parts of Speech are
There? ……
8 Basic Parts of Speech
(Think of Parts of Speech as “Types of
Words)
1. A word naming a person, place, or thing, is a
NOUN
2. A word showing action is a
VERB
3. A word that describes is an
ADJECTIVE
4. A word that describes a verb or adjective and
that usually ends in “LY” is an
ADVERB

5. A word that links a noun to another word is a
PREPOSITION (with, from, to)
6. A word that also links, can join sentences is a
CONJUNCTION (and, but, or)
7. A word that is a short exclamation is an
INTERJECTION (ouch! hey! oh! yikes!)
8. A word used to replace a noun is a
PRONOUN (He, she, me, them…)
(Some argue there 9 parts of speech if you count
articles, word like a, an, the).

Three little words you often see
Are ARTICLES: a, an, and the.
A NOUN's the name of anything,
As: school or garden, toy, or swing.
ADJECTIVES tell the kind of noun,
As: great, small, pretty, white, or brown.
VERBS tell of something being done:
To read, write, count, sing, jump, or run.
How things are done the ADVERBS tell,
As: slowly, quickly, badly, well.

CONJUNCTIONS join the words together,
As: men and women, wind or weather.
The PREPOSITION stands before
A noun as: in or through a door.
The INTERJECTION shows surprise
As: Oh, how pretty! Ah! how wise!
The whole are called the PARTS of SPEECH,
Which reading, writing, speaking teach.
…..(I don’t know why they didn’t include
pronouns! Oh well! )
