Presentation Time!

Each student will go up and read their essay to
the class.
Journal Entry

You will have 15 minutes to write in your
journals. Please answer the following questions:
Do you wish to be popular? What does “popular”
mean to you? Is being “popular” a characteristic that
you would want to have? What about your friends?
Do you think they wish to be popular?
 What are your thoughts about movies? What kind of
movies do you like? Do you feel movies are
becoming too violent or lewd in conduct? In what
ways would you help improve the quality of movies?

Subject

The first noun position is called the subject.

This can be defined as the “doer” of the sentence.

Ask the question “Who is doing the action?”


The dog sat down.
In most situations, the subject will be placed ahead
of the main verb.
Direct Object/Compound Object
Nouns

The 2nd noun position is called the direct object.

This can be defined as:


It usually can be found after the verb.



The noun that receives the action.
I like pizza.
Martina loves the pool.
Sometimes there can be more than two objects. That’s called
Compound Object Nouns
Indirect Object

This can be defined as:
A noun that receives the direct object.
 This will work with giving verbs such as:


Gave, bought, sold, brought, drew, mailed, told, made,
cooked, sent, taught, caught, baked
He gave Eddie a noogie.
 She mailed her boyfriend a letter.
 I sold Gina a cookie.

Noun Positions

The 4th noun position is called object of the
preposition.

What is a preposition?
A preposition is a word which shows the relation of a
noun/pronoun to some other word in the sentence.
 In other words, it gives the position of the noun (i.e. The
book is on the table)

Object of the Preposition

Any part of the sentence that contains a
preposition and a noun, that is called a
prepositional phrase.

Example:
I am at school. (at= preposition, at school= prepositional
phrase)
 She is under water.

Preposition

Last time, you wrote a lot of prepositions down. Can
you list some of them to me?



These are nouns that do 2 things



Follows a linking verb (i.e. am/is/are, was/were)
Explains the subject noun

My favorite sport is basketball.
Adjective Suffixes

When you see a word that ends with “-able”, “-ful,” or
“-y”, most likely they are adjectives.

Exercise: Mark if the word is a noun or adjective









