Interjections
An interjection is a word or phrase
used to express emotion.
Verbs
A verb is a word used to express an
action, a condition, or a state of being.
There are 3 types of
Verbs:
Action Verbs
Linking Verbs
Helping Verbs
Action
Verbs
An action verb tells what the subject
does.
Physical Action: run, jump, swim
Mental Action: wish, hope, dream
Linking
Verbs
A linking verb links its subject to a
word in the predicate.
FORMS OF BE: am, is, are, was,
were, be, being, been, have, has, had
Helping
Verbs
A helping verb helps main verbs express
action or precise shades of meaning.
Examples: has, have, had
could, should, would, may, might, must,
can, shall, will
Adjectives
An adjective is a word that modifies, or
describes, a noun or pronoun.
Adjectives answer 3
questions:
What Kind?
Which one or ones?
How many / how much?
Nouns
A noun is a word that names a person,
place, thing, or idea.
Common Noun:
The general name for a person,
place, thing, or idea
Proper Noun:
The name of a particular person,
place, thing, or idea.
Proper nouns are ALWAYS Capitalized.
Conjunctions
A conjunction is a word used to join words
or groups of words; connectors:
For
And
Nor
But
Or
Yet
So
Adverbs
An adverb is a word that modifies, or
describes, a verb, an adjective, or another
adverb.
Adverbs answer 4 questions:
How? suddenly, carefully, sadly
When? now, later, soon
Where? there, up, ahead
To What Extent? completely, totally, fully
Pronouns
A pronoun is a word that is used in place of
a noun.
EXAMPLES: I, you, he, she, it, me, we, they, him,
his, hers, my, mine, your, yours, its, us, our, ours,
their, theirs
Prepositions
A preposition is a word that shows a
relationship between a noun or a pronoun
to other words in the sentence.
Examples: about, above, across, against, among,
around, behind, beside, below, between, during,
except, by, down, over, under, of, off, on, through,
beneath, to, after, toward, up, onto, unto, into, in
Articles
Articles are words that are linked to
nouns to identify them rather than
describe them.
examples: a, an, the
