What’s New?
• The SATs tests are national statutory tests and are taken in
English and Mathematics.
• Writing result will be based on teacher assessment throughout
the year
• Tougher SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar test)
• Removal of the calculator paper
• Reading and Maths assessments will still be conducted as in
previous years during SATs week.

The booklet will contain 3-4
unrelated texts for the
children to read and answer
questions ranging from 1 to 3

Spelling, Punctuation and
Grammar Test
Grammar Test
• Grammar is about making meaning
• It is part of the curriculum from FS to
KS2 and beyond
• The same word can perform different
functions, depending on the sentence in
which it is found…
The Y6 test….
• 45 minutes
• Some multiple choice
• Some short words,
phrases or sentences
• Explain why….answers
• A separate spelling test
• Tougher marking –
accuracy, checking for
missing words and careless
errors

Grammatical Terms /Word classes and the function of these
words:
• Nouns, verbs, adjectives, connectives,
pronouns, adverbs, prepositions, articles
• Features of sentences, how and when to use these
• The grammar of complex sentences
The differing degrees of formality
• Tense
• Subject –verb agreement
• Use of ‘I’ and ‘me’
Key aspects…
• Get interested in words and word choicesnotice how the experts do it
• Teach specific aspects using correct
terminology
• Practice- little and often

Spelling
• This follows the same format, with 20
target words, presented within
contextualised sentences
• Higher emphasis on root words
• Irregular spelling patterns – encourage
your children to learn their spellings
Mathematics
• All 3 test papers will cover the 4 key areas of
maths:
• Problem solving, reasoning and communication
(being able to explain your answers and ask
questions)
• Number and calculations (no calculators)
• Shape, space and measures – positions and
direction
• Data handling and probability
Mental Maths Test
20 questions (20% of the overall mark )
Testing mental recall and agility
Children have 5 – 10 – 15 seconds to answer
questions
Visual images e.g. clocks, shapes, number
facts and creating pictures
Number bonds, multiplication tables,
mathematical knowledge, technical
vocabulary and key facts need to be known
Mathematics
Test 1 and Test 2 (45 minutes each)
40 marks each paper
Using and applying, communicate
mathematically, logical reasoning and
application of problem solving skills
there are very few ‘traditional
calculations’ e.g. 345 x 48
Each question carries either 1 or 2
marks
Pupils need to show their methods
