We use the Past Continuous to describe an action that was in progress
at some point in the past
He was having breakfast at 9 o`clock yesterday.
They were skiing from 10 till 12 yesterday
morning.
We can also use the past continuous to describe
two actions that were in progress at the same time
He was reading the
newspaper in a café
while his daughter with
her boyfriend were
passing by.
Very often, the past continuous and the past
simple are used together. The past continuous is
used to describe an activity in progress and the
past simple describes an action that interrupts
this activity.
