The Simple Past
We use the simple past to talk about
completed past events and activities.
I studied grammar last night.
The children played games in the living
room.
Affirmative Statements

For all regular verbs, add an –ed ending in
the past tense. This form is used for all
subjects, both singular and plural.
I stayed up late last night.
The children played games in the garden.
She listened to the news after dinner.
Negative Statements
For negative past verbs, use did not before
the simple form of the verb:
My roommate did not like that restaurant.
The contraction of did not is didn’t:
I didn’t live in a dormitory last night.
Our family didn’t own a computer until
recently.

Yes/No Questions
For simple past tense yes/no questions
with main verbs other than be, include did
(n’t) before the subject.
Did you study last week?
Didn’t your father call yesterday?
- The main verb is in the simple form.
- There’s no final –ed ending in the
question form.

Examples
Did your mother cook last night?
Yes, she did
No, she
didn’t
Did you move to a new apartment?
Yes, I did
No, I didn’t
Didn’t the neighbors paint their house a
few years ago?
Yes, they did
No, they didn’t
Information Questions
Simple past information questions have did
before the subject.
- Who did you call yesterday?
I called my sister.
- When did your relatives visit?
They visited last month.
- Why didn’t you order pizza?
I wanted a home-cooked meal.
When who or what is the subject of the
sentence, the main verb is in the simple
past tense, did is NOT used before the
subject.
Who argued a lot?
My sisters and I argued a lot.
Examples
I travelled with my sister.
Who did you travel with you?
My parents stayed in their new apartment.
Where did your parents stay?
Nora visited her friend yesterday.
Who visited her friend yesterday?
