• As you progress through your academic
career, you will read more and more
informational text.
• Here is one way to make sure you understand
everything….
Six Strategies for Reading
Informational Text
Step 1:
• Number each paragraph in the article.
• Why is this important?
Step Two
• Chunk Paragraphs into Separate Sections.
• How does chunking your paragraphs into
sections help you as a reader?
Step Three
• Highlight, Circle or Underline with a purpose.
• Underline every claim and/or Argument in the
Text.
• Circle and define key terms.
• Underline power verbs.
• How does marking claims help you as a
reader?
Step Four
• In the left hand margin write a 10 word
summary of each section. This should
summarize the chunk you just read.
• How does summarizing each section help you
as a reader?
Step Five
• In the right hand margin, write a power verb to
describe what the author is doing with each chunk.
– This will be the text structure.
– So, what are the different types of text structure you see in
informational text?
• Or, draw a picture to describe the chunk.
• Or, ask a question
• How does recognizing the different type of text
structure help you as a reader?
Step Six
• Summarize the entire article in 10 words.
– Read the summaries you wrote for each chunked
section.
• How does summarizing the entire article help
you as a reader?
