Sit and Set
The
verb sit means to be seated.
Sit seldom takes an object.
Who is sitting on the blanket? (no object)

verb set means to place something.
Set usually takes an object
I had set the bucket on the pier. (bucket is
the object)
Rise and Raise
The
verb rise means to move upward.
Rise does not take an object.
The fans were rising to sing the song. (no
obj.)
The
verb raise usually takes an object.
Fans were raising signs. (signs is the object)
Lie and Lay
The
verb lie means to recline, or to remain
lying down.
Lie does not take an object.
The silverware is lying on the table. (no
object)
The verb lay means to put, or to place.
Lay usually takes an object.
Bill had laid that bicycle in the driveway.
(bicycle is the object)
