Let’s have a look at this step by step The Present Tense Ich kaufe umweltfreundliche Produkte (I buy environmentally friendly products) TRANSFORMATION – Present Tense Present Perfect (past) Ich umweltfreundliche Produkte The Present Perfect Tense (past tense) Ich habe umweltfreundliche Produkte (I bought environmentally friendly products) ge kauf t Regular verbs using ‘haben’ Ich habe geduscht Ich habe den Hausmüll getrennt Ich habe Energie gespart Ich habe Glas und Papier recycelt Ich habe meine Stofftasche benutzt Now have a look at the verb ‘bringen’ which is not regular The Present Tense Ich bringe Glas zum Altglascontainer (I take glass to the bottle bank) TRANSFORMATION – Present Tense Present Perfect (past) Ich Glas zum Altglascontainer The Present Perfect Tense (past tense) Ich habe Glas zum Altglascontainer (I took glass to the bottle bank) ge brach t Have you noticed….? • The participle (the verb at the end of a sentence in the past tense) also had the ‘ge’ at the front and ended in ‘t’ • But something happened to the middle of the verb. It went from ‘bringe’ to ‘gebracht’. Totally ridiculous! Now look at the verbs ‘gehen’ and ‘fahren’ which also do not follow the regular pattern The Present Tense Ich gehe zu Fuß zur Schule (I walk to school) TRANSFORMATION – Present Tense Present Perfect (past) Ich zu Fuß zur Schule The Present Perfect Tense (past tense) Ich bin zu Fuß zur Schule (I walked to school) ge gang en The Present Tense Ich fahre mit dem Rad zur Schule (I travel to school by bike) TRANSFORMATION – Present Tense Present Perfect (past) Ich mit dem Rad zur Schule The Present Perfect Tense (past tense) Ich bin mit dem Rad zur Schule (I travelled to school by bike) ge fahr en Verbs that take ‘sein’ instead of ‘haben’ are usually verbs that express movement,i.e. going (ich bin…gegangen) or travelling (ich bin…gefahren) Schreibe die Sätze auf Deutsch!
