What is Kosher?
The Hebrew word kosher means "fit." The kosher laws state
the foods that are fit for a Jew to eat.
The kosher laws were given to Moses on Mount Sinai from
God.
Basically certain animals are classed as Kosher and others
are not.
Which Animals Are Kosher?
Land animals such as cows, sheep, goats and deer are
kosher.
Examples of kosher birds are chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys
and pigeons.
Fish & Seafood: A water creature is kosher if it has fins and
scales such as salmon, tuna, pike, flounder, carp and herring
are kosher.
Which animals are not kosher?
All reptiles, amphibians, worms and insects, are not kosher.
Catfish, sturgeon, swordfish, lobster, shellfish, crabs and all
water mammals are not.
Pigs, rabbits, squirrels, bears, dogs, cats, camels and horses
are not.
Food that Jews are NOT allowed to eat are called
Treifah.
Separating Meat and Dairy
Meat and milk are never combined. Separate utensils are
used for each.
Special objects
The Torah scroll is a long scroll containing the text
of the Five Books of Moses, hand-written
by a scribe in Hebrew. It is rolled up around two
ornate wooden shafts, attached to either end
of the scroll. Kept in the Ark of each synagogue,
the Torah scroll is read aloud in all synagogues.
The Menorah
• Eight branched candle stick holder which is used during the
religious festival of Hanukah (Festival of lights). It reminds
Jews of a great victory when they re-captured the Great
Synagogue from the Greeks.
Cedar/Seder plate
• When the Jews escaped slavery after the persecution of the
Pharaoh a festival was declared. On the evening of the
festival known as Passover (Angel of death passed over the
homes) a special service called a Seder takes place over a
meal around a table in a home
The Kippah
• a skull cap worn by males. It is a symbol that they
are part of the Jewish community and shows
respect for God. It is especially worn during prayer.
