Type1, also called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is
a disorder of the body's immune system—that is, its system for
protecting itself from viruses, bacteria or any "foreign" substances.
It may run in families.
Environmental factors, such as certain types of viral infections,
formula feeding beginning before age 3 months (that is,
breastfeeding for less than 3 months, or not at all), and exposure to
certain food additives, such as nitrates and nitrosamines, may also
contribute.
It is most common in people of non-Hispanic white persons of
Northern European descent, followed by African Americans and
Hispanic Americans. It is relatively rare in those of Asian descent.
It is slightly more common in men than in women.

While a third are aware that they have it,
another one third or 5.2 million are unaware
that they have diabetes.
An additional 20 million people have prediabetes.
Is a leading cause of death and disability.
Costs $98 billion per year.
