Formal Commands
 Use with anyone you would refer to as Mr. or Mrs./Ms.
 Also known as Usted (Ud.) Commands
 Step 1: Determine the yo form of the verb
 Step 2: Replace the –o ending with –e for –ar verbs
 Step 3: Replace the –o ending with –a for –er and –
ir verbs
Formal Commands
 Examples:
 Repase la tarea, por favor. (Repasar)
 Review the homework, please.
 Escriba las respuestas en la pizarra. (Escribir)
 Write the answers on the board.
Plural Commands
 Use when talking to a group of people
 Also known as Ustedes (Uds.) Commands
 Step 1: Determine the yo form of the verb
 Step 2: Replace the –o ending with –e for –ar verbs
 Step 3: Replace the –o ending with –a for –er and –
ir verbs
 Step 4: Add –n to the end of the verb
Plural Commands
 Examples:
 Cierren sus libros. (Cerrar)
 Close your books.
 Hablen el español, por favor. (Hablar)
 Speak Spanish, please.
Irregular Formal and Plural
Commands
 Some verbs have irregular formal and plural command
forms. Memorize these verbs.
 dar
 estar
 ir
 saber
 ser
dé/den
esté/estén
vaya/vayan
sepa/sepan
sea/sean
Attaching Pronouns
 Attach pronouns to the end of the command form
when they are needed.
 Examples:



Dígale la respuesta. Tell her the answer.
Levántense temprano. Get yourselves up early.
Démelo. Give it to me.
