ANTES DE EMPEZAR …
• I’m going to tell you a quick story about my childhood using the
imperfect! Listen carefully to see if you can recognize the verbs.
There will be pictures on the screen to help you understand the
verbs and what’s happening in the new tense
VERBOS CONOCIDOS
• “Yo siempre bailaba”
• “Me gustaba bailar”
• “Emily y yo siempre bailábamos y mirábamos la televisión
• “Yo estudiaba el español”
• Yo trabajaba para un restaurante”
EL IMPERFECTO
The imperfect tense in Spanish is used to discuss
actions in the past that:
- Occurred repeatedly
- I went to school every day
- or occurred over an extended period of time
- I used to dance often
** The imperfect tense implies that the past action
did not have a definite beginning or end
The imperfect can also be used to talk
about:
- Feelings or conditions
- My sister was sad
- or setting the stage for another past event. It’s also
always used to tell time, weather, and age!
- I was walking to school when I saw my friend
CONJUGACIONES
• Here are the regular –ar verb endings:

Bailar- to dance
Yo bailaba

Él/ella/usted bailaba

hablar- to talk

PRÁCTICA GUIADA
• Fill in the blank with the verb in parentheses conjugated in the imperfect.
Then, translate the sentence to English. You may work with the people
around you!
1. Yo _____ (bailar) todos los días.
2. Los chicos _____ (jugar) al beisbol.
3. Mi hermana siempre _____ (tomar) leche.
4. Tú ______ (estar) feliz.
5. Nosotros _______ (mirar) la televisión después de la escuela.
6. Yo siempre _______ (necesitar) kétchup con mi hamburguesa.
UN JUEGO
• Vamos a jugar ARMADA!
• You will need a pencil, a partner, and a notebook to
put up between you and your partner so that you
cannot see their game board
• Before we begin, you’ll need to fill in your verb
conjugations! Conjugate the verbs on the bottom in
the five forms listed in the columns
UN JUEGO DE ARMADA
• The game has the same rules as Battleship in English.
When your partner cannot see your board, circle five
conjugated verbs. These are your battleships.
• One at a time, a your partner will guess where your
battleships are located by verbally saying the subject
pronoun and verb (example: Ellos bailaban)
• If they guess a verb you circled, say “golpeado” (hit!). If
they miss and guess an uncircled verb, say “agua”. The
first partner to find all five battleships wins!
PRACTICA INDEPENDIENTE
• “Cuando era niño(a)” → When I was a child
• Write a paragraph (at least 5 complete sentences) using the
imperfect tense about what you used to do when you were a
child. You may use dictionaries! Remember, you only know how
to conjugate –AR verbs ☺ some good verbs to use are:
• Bailar
• Cantar
• Trabajar
Tocar
Jugar
Hablar
Llamar
Estar
Mirar
Escuchar
Gustar
