Windows 8 provides two file recovery tools:
• File History
• Windows 7 File Recovery

The Windows 8 Startup Process
The Windows 8 startup process:
1. BIOS performs a POST, and loads the MBR
2. MBR loads the Windows Boot Manager
3. Boot Manager loads BCD
4. BCD loads Winload.exe
5. Winload.exe initializes the Windows 8 kernel
6. Drivers and services load
7. User logs on to computer
Windows Startup and Recovery Options
Windows 8 provides a number of startup
recovery tools:
• Windows RE
• Automatic failover to Windows Startup Recovery
• Advanced Boot Options
Windows System Restore
System Restore takes snapshots of your computer
system, and then saves them as restore points
You can use System Restore to:
• Perform driver rollback
• Protect against accidental program deletion
• Roll back the entire computer’s configuration
What Is the Windows 8 BCD Store?
The BCD is stored as a registry hive. For BIOS-based
systems, the BCD registry file is located in the active
partition\Boot directory.
The BCD store is an extensible database of objects
and elements that can include information about:
• The hibernation image
• Windows 8 startup options
• Alternate startup options for operating systems
Understanding the BCD Configuration Settings
Use the BCDEdit command-line tool to make changes
to the BCD, such as removing entries from the list of
displayed operating systems
You can use the following tools to modify the BCD:
• Startup and recovery
• Msconfig.exe
• BCDEdit.exe
• BootRec.exe
Advanced Boot Options
Windows 8 provides Advanced Boot Options that you can use
to start the operating system in an advanced troubleshooting
mode
Advanced Boot Options contains the following options:
• Repair your computer
• Safe mode
• Safe mode with networking
• Safe mode with command prompt
• Enable log booting
• Enable low resolution video (640 X 480)
• Debugging Mode
• Disable automatic restart on system failure
• Disable Driver Signature Enforcement
• Start Windows normally
Tools Available in Windows RE
Windows RE provides access to six recovery tools:
• Refresh your PC
• Reset your PC
• System Restore
• System Image Recovery
• Automatic Repair
• Command Prompt

In this demonstration, you will see how to:
• Access Windows RE to perform startup repair options
• Enable access to the Advanced Boot Options menu

Lab Scenario
You must recover the Windows 8 computer of one
of the employees in A. Datum. To do this you will
first examine the recovery options available in
Windows 8. You then will attempt to resolve a
startup issue, and you will document the solution
used to resolve the issue.
