• A dichotomous key is a tool that allows the
user to determine the identity of items in
the natural world, such as trees,
wildflowers, mammals, reptiles, rocks, and
fish. Keys consist of a series of choices
that lead the user to the correct
identification of an item.

• It’ s easy to read a key… But can you
make one???
• I would like to key you some tips to
making a key.
Tips
• Make detailed qualitative and quantitative
observations.
• Have a clear title for the key.
• Sometimes it helps to identify what something is.
• Did you know what a vamp was?
• The first question should separate half the items.
• When you are done have someone work the key.
