Google Challenges Microsoft
• Eric Schmidt, Chief Executive of Google, has
made blatant challenges towards Microsoft.
• The most recent challenge is their new
operating system, Google Chrome OS.
• Development of Chrome OS was realized by
slowing revenue in online advertisements.
Google Chrome OS
•
•
•
•
Introduced in 2008
Quick booting
Aimed towards inexpensive laptops (netbooks)
New security features that are designed from
past faults of Microsoft operating systems
• Rather than paying for other programs, this one
is downloadable and free
Google Chrome OS (Cont’d)
• Compatible with applications on any other
standard web browser
• Designed to run on machine powered by PC
chips and ARM chips used in cell phones
• ARM chips are less expensive and provide
longer battery life
• Chrome is also accelerating the shift of PC’s to
the cell phone industry
Chrome OS (again)
• PC to cell phone switch would make the service
carrier have the hardware and software and
have monthly service fees as well.
• Chrome OS is a huge business opportunity for
Google because it will allow them to compete
more successfully with Microsoft.
Plans of Competition
• In the early 90’s Schmidt tried to challenge
Microsoft, but could not compete with
Microsoft’s marketing advantages.
• In 2003-2005 secret meetings, code-named
“Canada” were put into place to develop plans
to foil Microsoft’s acquisition of Yahoo.
• Schmidt acquired the Microsoft VP (Lee) to
run his Chinese business
Plans of Competition (Cont’d)
• In 2007 Google came out with wordprocessing and spreadsheet software to
compete with Microsoft Office.
• Android, software used to power applications
on mobile phones, was recently introduced to
compete with similar Microsoft software
The large contrast in net
income between the two
competing companies shows
why Google has been
interested in challenging
Microsoft’s nearly
monopolistic empire.
Chrome’s Current Popularity
• Chrome is holding less than 2% of the market
share. Compared to the 65.5% of Microsoft
and 22.5% of Firefox
• The market share is not impressive, and in no
way could Google be considered dominant at
the current time.
