Output
Computer Hardware
• The visible, touchable parts of the computer
Input
• Data that enters an information system
Input Device
• Units that gather information and transform that
information into a series of electronic signals for the
computer
Types of Input Devices
• Keyboard
▫ An input device which sends data to the processor
• Mouse
▫ An input device that allows the user to manipulate
objects on the screen by moving the device along the
surface of a desk
• Other types of input devices include:
▫ Microphone, Scanner, and Touch Screen
• Can you think of any other input devices?
Types of Keys on the Keyboard
• Alphabetic Keys
▫ Letters a – z on the keyboard
• Numeric Keys
▫ Numbers 0 – 9 on the keyboard
• Function Keys
▫ Keys that allow you to do special things like print
• Manipulative/Modifier Keys
▫ Shift, Caps Lock, Tab, Return, Backspace, Alternate,
Control, Windows, etc.
Processing
• Manipulating raw data according to instructions
• Central Processing Unit (CPU) – The “brains” of the
computer.
Storage
• The ability of a computer to keep data when the
power to the computer is turned off.
Storage Device
• A storage process that holds data outside of the
processing unit
Types of Storage Devices
• USB Flash Drive
▫ A portable storage device that plugs into a USB port in
front or back of the computer.
• CD/DVD
▫ Plastic disk written on with laser beams to store data
• CD/DVD Drive
▫ Where a computer reads or writes to a “compact disk”
(CD or DVD)
More types of Storage Devices
• Hard Drive
▫ Primary device used to store information
▫ Magnetically stores data on a stack of rotating disks
called platters.
▫ May be internal or external
• Other types of storage devices include:
▫ Memory Card and online storage sites
• Can you think of any other types of storage devices?
Output
• Useful information that exits in an information
system
Output Device
• A means of viewing processed data
Types of Output Devices
• Monitor
▫ Screen – Most commonly used video display
• Printer
▫ Output device that produces a hard copy of
information in a computer document or screen
• Other types of output devices include:
▫ Speakers, Headphones, and Projector
• Can you think of some other output devices?
Computer Hardware in Plain English
• To view this video, please access the PowerPoint
from the shared drive at school.
Computer Software in Plain English
• To view this video, please access the PowerPoint
from the shared drive at school.
Software Terms
• Software/program
▫ Written instructions for the computer designed to
solve specific problems or for specific uses (Example:
Word processing, spreadsheets, graphic design, etc.)
• Application Software
▫ Programs written to complete specific tasks such as
word processing, spreadsheets, or games
• Word Processing
▫ The process of editing and formatting words
• MS Word
▫ A type of application software for word processing
Operating System Terms
• Operating System software
▫ Master controller for all activities that take place
within a computer
• MS Windows/Mac OS
▫ Types of system software
▫ They run the basic operations of your computer.
Important terms to know
• Return/Enter
▫ A manipulative key which advances the cursor
• Login/Logoff
▫ The means of entering and exiting a computer system
• Cursor
▫ The position indicator
• Prompt
▫ A message from the computer that requires a response
from the user
• Default
▫ Settings used unless another option is chosen
Types of Spacing in a Document
• Single Space (SS)
▫ 0 blank lines
▫ 1 enter or typing on every available line
• Double Space (DS)
▫ 1 blank line, 2 enters or typing on every other available
line
• Triple Space (TS)
▫ 2 blank lines, 3 enters or leaving two blank lines
between each line of writing
• Quadruple Space (QS)
▫ 3 blank lines, 4 enters or leaving 3 blank lines between
each line of writing

Key by touch with correct finger
Sit a hand-span from the table edge
Using Wordwrap
• Manual Return (also called a Hard Return)
▫ When the computer operator physically presses the
return or enter key
• Automatic Return (also called a Soft Return or
Wordwrap)
▫ When the computer makes the decision to start a new
line
▫ The feature of a word processing software that allows
the computer to return for you at the end of each line.
The End!
• Good job!
