On completion of this course, a student:
• Will have a fair understanding of a computer system and will be able
to perform basic file operations using windows operating system.

• Will be able to write simple documents using a word processor.
• Will be able to use a spreadsheet program to solve engineering
related mathematical problems mostly encountered in their course
program.
W be able to write small but useful programs using ‘BASIC’
• Will
programming language.
• The main aim of this course is to train students to use a
computer to their advantage to solve trade-related
(technical) problems. Therefore emphasis will be mostly
on spreadsheet and programming.

• The first topic “introduction to computing” is to give
students just enough information to perform basic file
operations, and to enable them to work in a windows
environment.
The topic on word processing is to give basic
introduction about word processing, and not to teach
word processing in detail.

Mainframe
It's 50 years since IBM launched the first System/360 mainframe.
www.ferdinandcenon.com
The S/360 is feted as the grandfather of modern computing. The
first IBM mainframes relied on processors with clock speeds as low
as 1MHz, and with memories of between 8KB and 8MB. Much of
the S/360's design stemmed from a 1956 IBM project to deliver a
computer 100 times faster than the status quo.
IBM built the computer, known as the 7030, for the Los Alamos
National Laboratory using a brand-new invention, the transistor.
IBM estimates there are 1.1 million mainframe transactions every
second. The machines process the vast majority of credit card
transactions – equivalent to $6 trillion annually

8 bit 1972 by the Intel 8008, the world's first 8-bit microprocessor.
16 bit The first multi-chip 16-bit microprocessor was the National
Semiconductor IMP-16, introduced in early 1973
32 bit The most significant of the 32-bit designs is the Motorola
MC68000, introduced in 1979
64 bit since the early 1990s (including the Nintendo 64 gaming
console in 1996), the early 2000s saw the introduction of 64-bit
microprocessors targeted at the PC market.
