Grounding Solutions
Presentation by: Electro Static Technology
Patent Pending
Introduction
Electrostatic charges will cause a variety of
failures in electronic equipment due to
electrostatic forces and electrostatic discharge.
This presentation will cover the problems
created by electrostatic charges along with
cost effective solutions.

Electrostatic Forces
Charged surfaces will attract or repel other
charged surfaces due to electrostatic forces.
The effects of electrostatic forces are:
– Material handling problems
– Contamination problems

Electrostatic Discharge
Static charges can build up to high levels.
An electrostatic discharge will result when
the electric field between a charged surface
and another part inside a machine exceeds
the breakdown strength of air.
The breakdown strength of air is 3000 volts
per millimeter.

Electrostatic Discharge
The effects of electrostatic discharge are:
–
–
–
–
–
Electric shock to personnel (mild to severe)
Permanent damage to circuit components
Damage to interface displays (LED, LCD)
Damage to print heads
Latent damage to semiconductor junctions

Electro Magnetic Interference
An electrostatic discharge will create a pulse of
Electro-Magnetic Interference.
Electro-Magnetic pulses will interfere with data
streams and microprocessor operation.
Electro-Magnetic Interference will also affect
other electronics in the vicinity of the discharge.

Metallic Grounding Straps
Traditional grounding straps are made of solid,
stranded, or braided wire conductors.
Wire grounding strap assemblies are expensive
to manufacture.
Wire grounding strap assemblies are difficult to
handle and install on an assembly line.
Metallic grounding straps can fatigue and break
if attached to articulating devices.

Electrostatic Ground Strap
The ESG Strap™ is a one piece conductive
film strip with mounting holes punched into
each end.
The volume resistivity is 1 x 106 ohm-cm.
Electrostatic charges will drain to ground in
a controlled manner.
The conductive film material is flexible and
easy to route inside equipment.

Electrostatic Ground Strap
The ESG Strap will not fatigue and break
when attached to articulating devices.
The conductive film material is corrosion
resistant and will not oxidize in the presence
of moisture.
The ESG Strap is lightweight, durable, and
easy to install on an assembly line.

Electrostatic Ground Strap
The ESG Strap is available in three standard
sizes:
– 6mm wide for M2 and #2-56 screws
– 8mm wide for M3 and #4-40 screws
– 10mm wide for M4 and #6-32 screws
The ESG Strap is available in any length from
25 millimeters to 1 meter.

Safety Grounds
The ESG Strap is not designed to be used as a
Safety Ground.
Follow the grounding requirements of the National
Electrical Code if your application must be able to
conduct uncontrolled currents to ground.
