OF HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE .
COMPUTER EQUIPMENT SAFETY
This class may frequently involve
the use of computing and
networking equipment.
It is important to understand a few
safety principles that are key to
protecting both user and
equipment.
PROTECTING USERS FROM HARM
ELECTRICAL SHOCK
What is electrical shock?
Sudden stimulation of the nerves or
convulsive contraction of the muscles
that is caused by the discharge through
the body of electricity from a charged
source, OR exposing yourself to live
electrical circuits
PREVENTION OF SHOCK
• Be sure equipment is
unplugged before servicing.
• Do not open power supplies
or other high voltage
components.
• Be aware capacitors can
hold a charge even after
device is unplugged.
CUTS
• Avoid sharp edges on the
sheet metal inside some
computer cases.
• Use caution when unplugging
some connectors, because
they can require much effort
and may come apart abruptly,
causing injury to the hand.
BURNS
• Electronic components,
especially CPUs, can become
very hot.
• Use caution when touching
electronic parts.
PROTECTING EQUIPMENT FROM HARM
ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE
What is electrostatic discharge?
•
Transfer of electrical charge
between any two objects
•
Although not usually dangerous
to the technician, ESD can cause
permanent damage to internal
computer components, such as
RAM
PREVENTION OF
ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE
•
Special precautions, such as
wearing a wrist strap, must be
taken when servicing equipment
PROPER CONNECTOR HANDLING
Connectors both within and outside
computing equipment are both precise and
fragile.
Always use an appropriate amount of force
when inserting or removing connectors.
Most connectors should not be pulled at an
angle.
Use caution with exposed connectors to
ensure pins do not get bent.
COMPUTER EQUIPMENT SAFETY
Have safe fun and ask questions!
The instructor is eager to answer
questions related to the equipment
you are studying.
