In Puerto Rico, English is taught as a Second
Language and poetry is usually written in
Spanish.

Haiku- “ Because it is a rather abstract form,
children actually require some experience and
maturity to understand and appreciate haiku”
(81).


humor, familiar experiences, and animals” (81).

“Students preferred poems that contain rhyme,
rhythm, and sound” (81).

Teachers “are always more successful when
presenting poems they honestly like” (85).


Haiku- is a form of Japanese poetry,
consisting of 17 syllables (a line of 5 syllables, a
line of 7 syllables, and another line of 5 syllables),
that express something about nature.
Example: Take the butterfly:
Nature works to produce him.
