Environmental Severity Monitoring for Increased Aircraft Maintenance Efficiency
PROBLEM STATEMENT
BENEFITS
• The DoD spends in excess of $2.8 billion per year on
corrosion test and inspection for aircraft
• Maintenance man hours (MMH) for corrosion test and
inspection are applied on a schedule basis
• Application of MMH to corrosion test and inspection on
a schedule basis reduces aircraft availability and
reduces overall maintenance enterprise capacity
• Deferring corrosion test and inspection without
knowledge of corrosive conditions increases risk of
corrosion damage and increases future repair costs
• The DoD does not have a means for monitoring aircraft
corrosive condition to prioritize inspections and
airframe corrosion maintenance
• Reduced MMH devoted to corrosion test and inspection
• Prioritization based on corrosion usage severity of
individual aircraft for inspection
• Improved aircraft availability based on proactive
condition based inspection and maintenance
• Reduced maintenance costs through early detection of
high severity conditions (contaminants, poor drainage,
etc.) on individual aircraft
• Improved fleet level lifecycle sustainment planning by
relating operational and deployment profiles to
corrosion severity, inspection requirements, and
preventative maintenance schedules
TECHNOLOGY SOLUTION
• The Luna sensor suite for aircraft corrosion monitoring
(LS2A) is a small, robust system that monitors, records,
and reports environmental parameters related to
corrosion severity within an airframe
• By monitoring temperature, relative humidity, solution
conductance, and alloy corrosion rate, the severity of
aircraft environmental exposure can be quantified
• Autonomous data analysis techniques provide a clear,
intuitive presentation of individual aircraft and fleetwide corrosivity as well as environmental severity
• The system has a flexible configuration and is easily
integrated on new aircraft or retrofit to legacy airframes
