COSTS OF IDLING
“The best way to warm up a vehicle is to drive it. No more than
30 seconds of idling on winter days is needed.”
Many vehicle owner’s manuals advise limiting idling:
• 2000-16 Subaru (all): “Avoid unnecessary engine idling”
• 2007-16 Ford F-250-350-450 Power Stroke diesels: “Idling in
cold weather does not heat the engine to its normal operating
temperature. Long periods of idling, especially in cold weather,
can cause a buildup of deposits which can cause engine
damage.”
