Our History and Mission
Uniting Tahoe’s Communities to
Strengthen Regional Prosperity
Founded in 2011 after the
unprecedented collaboration of the
2010 Lake Tahoe Basin Prosperity
Plan – the first comprehensive study
of the Tahoe region’s economy.
Truckee was not one of the Prosperity Plan
jurisdiction partners in 2010, but our hope is
that moving forward we can collaborate on
these important issues as we are one
regional economy.
Why do you live in Tahoe/Truckee?
I moved here to do this:
Tourism may have brought you
here, but how have you stayed?

Services ($1.98 Billion)
Environmental
Innovation ($857

businesses $1.54 Billion)
Tahoe is a $5 billion regional economy.

Initial Highlights:
Pronounced and sustained
population decline, but
perhaps some signs of
reversing this trend?
Continued reliance on
tourism, but tourism
employment has declined
from 50% of total
employment in 2003 to 44%
in 2013.
Tourism on the upswing as of
late, but are we maximizing capture?
Annual TOT Growth:
2014:
CA: 9.0%
CO: 7.6%
Tahoe: 5.5%
2010 –
First population increase
in 15 years.
Tourism currently on the
upswing again, but how
do we maximize tourism
in low snow seasons?
We need to upgrade our
communities –
environmental
redevelopment is key.
Income Levels:
•
Generally low incomes in the Basin, as compared to other areas
in California and Nevada
•
Incomes continue to decline - not keeping up with inflation

Housing Affordability (or not)
Housing Costs to Per Capita Income Ratios:
Reno 5 to 1
San Francisco 8 to 1
Tahoe: 10 to 1!
With household incomes
declining and home
values continuing to rise,
this trend is only getting
worse.
Approximately 60% of Tahoe’s homes are
non-resident (vacation/2nd homes) – further
reducing availability. Truckee is at 50/50
resident/second homeowner.
Doing more for the community and
working to ensure all Tahoe’s
residents are prosperous.
60%+ Tahoe’s children qualify for free
and reduced lunch programs.
Seasonal jobs just don’t turn into yearround ones very often.
Matching up two seasonal or part-time
jobs is tough in the “shoulder” seasons.
Some businesses are thriving by
guaranteeing hours to workers and in
return, getting great service and
commitment.
Let’s take care of our residents and our
residents will take care of our businesses.
Tahoe Jobs and Workforce
TPC will meet with local residents,
businesses and schools to
determine current challenges.
We will evaluate expected changes
to our tourism economy and what those changes may mean for future job
opportunities.
We will work with colleges to provide training needed for higher-wage jobs and
with businesses to hire local talent.
Let’s work together to diversify job opportunities within our core industry
sectors: Tourism and Visitor Services, Environmental Innovation, and Health
and Wellness.
