EDWG/WECC letter to Secretary of Interior –
sent in December
• Highlights use of DOI data by WECC
• Requests access to eGIS data
• Ensure WECC uses up-to-date and best available

Special topics 1: Sage-Grouse
New developments and data preparation
• Sept. 2015 decision – no ESA listing for Greater Sage-Grouse,
review in 2020
• BLM has revised 98 Regional Management Plans
• Other sage-grouse habitat not included
• EDWG presentations Jan. 15 by Anthony Titolo and Quincy
Bahr (BLM), and San Stiver (Western Association of Fish and

Sage-Grouse (2)
Considerations for EDWG and transmission planning:
• Sage-grouse assessment and protection -- $750 million in
state, federal and other effort so far, $500 million more in
next 5 years
• Major problems are habitat fragmentation and slow regrowth
of sagebrush stands (60-100 year rotation)
• Significant limitations going forward for land use activities
including transmission corridor planning and siting
• Many variations in data consistency and extent – major effort
by BLM on data standardization
• Data will become available to EDWG in stages over time

Special topics 2: RETI 2.0
California’s Renewable Energy Transmission Initiative 2.0
http://www.energy.ca.gov/reti/reti2/documents/
•
•
•
•
EDWG Presentation on Jan. 15 by Brian Turner (CPUC)
Coordination by California PUC, Energy Commission, CAISO
First phase through Fall 2016
Statewide, non-regulatory planning effort to help meet
statewide GHG and renewable energy goals
Identify land use and environmental opportunities and
constraints to access renewables in CA and the west
Assess transmission implications of renewable
scenarios, and identify common transmission elements
Already using EDWG data in DataBasin GIS platform, and will assess TEPPC
study cases
EDWG will continue to coordinate with RETI 2.0
