Allusion
• Allusion is a reference to a person, place,
thing or idea of historical, cultural, literary or
political significance.
• It does not describe in detail the person or
thing to which it refers. It is just a passing
comment and the writer expects the reader
to possess enough knowledge to spot the
allusion and grasp its importance in a text.
• *In our textbook, many allusions can be
found in the footnotes.
Allusion in Literature
"I am Nag. The great God Brahm put his mark
upon all our people, when the first cobra spread
his hood to keep the sun off Brahm as he slept.
Look, and be afraid!“
This allusion refers to the Hindu god, Brahm.
Ponyboy said, “When I stepped out into the
bright sunlight from the darkness of the
moviehouse, I had only two things on my mind:
Paul Newman and a ride home.
This allusion refers to a movie star in the 1960’s.
