Islamic Philosophy of Education

At the this presentation, we will

• The background of the Islamic philosophy of education.
• The three aspects which formulated the Islamic
philosophy of education:
• Metaphysics
• Epistemology
– Aims of education
– Methods and curriculum
– Role of the teacher
• Ethics
• Summarize the Islamic philosophy of education.
Background
• There is no God but Allah and that Prophet
Mohammed (peace be upon him) is his messenger.
• The Holy Quran and the Hadith are the two sources
which Muslims depend on their education.
• Education is a necessity to civilize the individual, build
his character and to form the society as well as to reach
a supreme level of spirituality with God.
Metaphysics
• The whole world is God’s creation.
• Man is God’s caliph on earth.
• Equality on distributing the natural resources.
• Man’s social commitments.
• The Day of Judgment.
Epistemology
• Education is part of religion.
• “Read” was the first verse in the Holy Quran.
• The purpose of Mohammed’s prophecy is to
teach man and develop his character.
• Man should learn from birth to death.
• Learners sit on the wings of angels.
• If a learner dies, Paradise is his reward.
Aims of Education
• God’s acceptance.
• Character development.
• Performing religious duties.
• Practical skills.
• Society survival.
Methods and Curriculum
• The Islamic philosophy of education is
holistic( religion, humanity, art, science,
history and geography).
• Practical skills.
• Corporal punishment VS the Islamic mercy.
The Role of the Teacher
• Mohammed (peace be upon him) is the first
teacher.
• Scientists fear Allah more than the rest.
• They have been placed in a higher state.
• They are the inheritors of the prophets.
• They should acquire a good character.
• They knowledgeable in their subjects.
Ethics
• Islam is the religion of treatment.
• Muslim is known by three attributes:
sincerity, keeping promises and
secretariat's performance and vice versa.
Summary
• Islam is an all-encompassing system which
includes all aspects of life.
• Education is the key to that success.
